Few pundits would expect to describe a 33-years-old veteran as the ‘surprise package’ of Gold Coast’s inaugural season, but Steve Fitzsimmons fits the bill perfectly after highly satisfying first spell in United’s colours. Steve made the right wing-back role his own for much of 2009/10 thanks to some assured displays and was rewarded by Miron Bleiberg with a new one-year contract. His favourite venue has to be Adelaide United’s Hindmarsh Stadium, where he registered both of his two Hyundai A-League goals to date. Steve was a foundation player with the now defunct New Zealand Knights and had a one-season spell with Miron Bleiberg at Queensland Roar before plying his trade in the state leagues of Queensland and Victoria. Freakishly fit, his ‘beep test’ results are the stuff of legend, as is his lively dressing room banter.
